Wappingers Central Schools Spring Butterfly Observation

Welcome to Our Observation of
The Pained Lady Butterfly

Third Graders in the Wappingers Central School District observe a miracle every spring! As part of their science curriculum they study the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly. Each child receives a Painted Lady butterfly in the larva stage, a small black caterpillar that eats and grows until it is ready to move into the next stage of its metamorphosis. One day, the third graders are surprised to find that their caterpillar is now in the pupa stage of its life. It is a chrysalis suspended from the lid of its home. Third graders watch the chrysalis as it changes in color until one day they are greeted by a miracle. Emerging from the chrysalis is a beautiful Painted Lady butterfly. Join them in this wonderful experience.

You can chase a butterfly all over the field and never catch it. But if you sit quietly in the grass it will come and sit on your shoulder.
